On 29th January 2025, Young Europe Society, in collaboration with "Octavian Goga" High School from Miercurea Ciuc, hosted an inspiring photo workshop aimed at helping scholars enhance their digital skills and social understandings. The non-formal learning phase provided an introduction to the basics of photography, including camera settings, composition rules, and essential techniques. After the theoretical part, the scholars ventured out into the streets of Miercurea Ciuc to put their newfound knowledge into action. Their goal? To capture the challenges faced by the city and its people, as well as to showcase the vibrancy of the local community through portrait photography.Â
The results were powerful. Not only did the scholars improve their photography skills, but they also gained a deeper understanding of the issues affecting their city. Through their lenses, they captured urban decay, social challenges, and infrastructure problems, shedding light on aspects of the city that often go unnoticed. Meanwhile, their portraits of the locals highlighted the strength, resilience, and colorful personalities of the community. This workshop wasn't just a creative exercise; it became a tool for awareness creation. By visually documenting the realities of Miercurea-Ciuc, the scholars sparked essential conversations about the needs and solutions for the city's future. Their photographs proved that storytelling through images has the power to inspire change and engage people in meaningful dialogue.Â
The experience encouraged the scholars to look at their surroundings through a new perspective, to connect with their community, and to use their creativity as a means to make a difference. Through their photos, they contributed to a broader conversation about the future of Miercurea Ciuc, reinforcing the idea that awareness is the first step toward progress.
This workshop demonstrated that photography is not just about capturing moments—it’s a way to drive education, social change, and empowerment.
